Hosting Buskalaska: Singer Songwriter from the UK

This weekend, we will be hosting Paul Thompson AKA Buskalaska who is touring Alaska on his own, performing in clubs and people’s homes along the way. He’ll be performing two sets Saturday night, July 2 here in Tok.

The first set is especially for families with children and starts around 5pm for an hour or so. Then around 7pm, Paul will launch into a second set of music.

Paul says he’s been hitchhiking mostly to get around the state and having good luck with it although he will try to catch the bus from Fairbanks to Tok. From here, he hopes to get to Haines so if you know anyone headed in that direction, please let us know as he’d love a ride!

We’ll have light snacks and beverages in the cooler and if it isn’t raining, we can have a firepit going to grill up some food if you want to bring something. Feel free to BYOB for yourselves or bring some munchies to share. This concert is brought to you by Duct Tape Radio and Humanities Forum.

We also plan on having a small garage sale Saturday morning starting at 9am. We’ll post signs out on the street. Mostly clothing and accessories for women (women’s sizes 7 thru 12) and girls (girl sizes 3T & 4T); toys, books.

Hope you’re enjoying the summer so far! (yes, there is sun here at the moment…)

Save the Date! 2 Concerts in Tok…

Summer is almost here, and with summer come the musicians. We have two upcoming house concerts in Tok in July – make sure to mark your calendars! For the uninitiated, a “house concert” is a concert hosted in someone’s home. These happen in communities around the country as musical artists make their way on often self-funded music tours. Last year, we hosted Marian Call and 907Britt at our place for a full night of great music.

July 2 – Meet singer-songwriter “Buskalaska on a magical mystery tour from England to the untamed wilds of Alaska and Canada, beginning June 2011. Buskalaska’s musical journey will take him from Anchorage to the Arctic Circle, from the Yukon and Alberta to the Rockies and isles of BC, performing at festivals, coffee houses and bars, house concerts and impromptu street performances. AND in Tok, Alaska at the Risdahl’s place. You can hear some of his music here.

July 16 – Folias Flute and Guitar Duo will be performing acoustic tango music in Tok (location TBA) AND giving Tango lessons. Yes, TANGO lessons.  More about them from their website:

The Grand Rapids, MI based Folias Flute and Guitar Duo was founded by the husband and wife duo Carmen Maret and Andrew Bergeron in 2002. They have performed in concert halls, clubs and for tango events across North America. The duo’s original compositions and arrangements have been recorded on four separate Folias CD releases which are on the Blue Griffin Recording and White Pine Music labels and have been reviewed by Flute Talk magazine and Fanfare Magazine. The duo’s background in classical concert music performance and composition mixed with their training in tango and jazz make their performances both informed and exciting. Find out more at Folias Music.

How is THAT for global culture in Tok, Alaska? What other events are happening in the community that you’d like to promote?

Concerts at Grumpy Grizz this week

This week: Wednesday, December 1 at noon and Saturday, December 4 at 1pm stop by to hear Pam Lehman and Jon Cox performing family- friendly, fairly folksy, and fully free music at the Grumpy Grizz.

According to an email from Pam:

Jon has been visiting Tok since August and working at his aunt Francine’s General Store. He will be leaving mid-December but plans to come back soon.  Pam is spending her first winter here in Tok and hopes that this will be a first of many free music events to come.   Both of them look forward to sharing some of their favorite songs.

Please join them on Wednesday or Saturday!

Interview: Musician, artist, writer Vanessa Boyd in Tok Sunday

I got an email from NYC-based singer/songwriter Vanessa Boyd who found this blog and got in touch to ask about opportunities to perform in Tok. She – like several other talented musicians including Marian Call and Britt Arnessen – are amenable to doing House Concerts where people literally host them at their homes and invite friends and people in the community.

Vanessa will be performing THIS SUNDAY June 27 from 7pm-9pm at the corner of West Willow and West C Street (on West C) across from Coast Guard housing. Just follow the music or look for the balloons!

This is an all-ages event (FAMILY FRIENDLY song set), we’ll have a fire pit going, and I have a bunch of rhubarb ready to cut if you’re in need. Also any artist who would like to show or sell their wares – let me know. I’ll have tables set up to display.

Here’s a brief interview with her that we did via email.

1. How would you describe your music to someone who isn’t familiar with your work?

IN TERMS OF THIS SET, AGNOSTIC ELECTRIC GOSPEL, MY MELODIES TEND TO REFLECT MY SOUTHERN ROOTS, GOSPEL AND AMERICANA. THE MUSIC IS BASED MORE ON MY TRAVELS, ESPECIALLY THE GNOUA, SUFI AND CHANTING OF DIFFERENT SPIRITUAL TRANCE MOVEMENTS IN MOROCCO, SPAIN, FRANCE, ETC. I BELIEVE IN THE SUBJECTIVITY OF THE WRITER, THAT WE ALL SPEAK FROM EXPERIENCE.

2. What instruments do you play and which is your favorite?

SINCE I’VE BEEN WRITING MUSIC, I HAVE SPENT THE MOST TIME WITH THE GUITAR, BOTH ACOUSTIC AND NOW ELECTRIC. I ALSO PLAY THE BARITONE UKELELE, SYNTHESIZER, AND THE MOROCCAN HAJHUJ. EACH INSTRUMENT TENDS TO BRING OUT DIFFERENT EMOTIONAL BASES.

3. Who inspires you musically?

IN THE LAST SEVERAL YEARS, I WOULD HAVE TO SAY THE BIGGEST INFLUENCES HAVE BEEN FUSION ARTISTS JUANA MOLINA AND MAJID BEKKHAS.

4. You are also an artist and describe your work as “reactionary art and art appropriation” – can you define what that means?

MY VISUAL ART FOCUSES ON MY REACTION TO DOMINATOR CULTURE AND IS OFTEN FEMINIST. WHEN I MOVED TO NEW YORK I STARTED WORKING IN MIXED MEDIA AND REALLY FELL FOR ART THAT USES NON-TRADITIONAL MATERIALS OR CONTEXTS.

4. And you’re a writer. What do you like to write about and why?

MY PUBLISHED WORK HAS MOSTLY BEEN FOR NEWSPAPERS AND MAGAZINES, ALTHOUGH I’VE ALSO PUBLISHED POETRY ON OCCASION. I LIKE RECOGNIZING GOOD WORK BY GOOD PEOPLE.

5. Which came first – Writing, Art or Music? When and what did you first create?

I DON’T REALLY SEE A SEPARATION BETWEEN WRITING, ART OR MUSIC. THEY’RE JUST DIFFERENT MEDIUMS FOR A MESSAGE. I’D DONE ALL OF THEM SINCE CHILDHOOD, BUT THE MUSIC BECAME A STRONG PASSION THAT GUIDED MY DECISIONS AS AN ADULT.

6. What is V2K Experience?

V2K IS THE NAME OF MY COMPANY, AND IT’S A PLATFORM FOR EXPANDING THE WAYS I WORK IN THE ARTS. EXPERIENCE IS A RESUME OF SORTS, A RUN DOWN OF WHAT I’VE DONE IN THE PROFESSIONAL WORLD IN CORPORATE AND MEDIA FIELDS.

Enjoy some artsy and eclectic sounds from the very talented Vanessa Boyd THIS SUNDAY June 27 from 7pm-9pm at the corner of West Willow and West C Street (on West C) across from Coast Guard housing.

And stay tuned for the date & time of Britt Arnessen’s House Concert.

The Piano in Tok

steinwaydA Steinway Grand Piano will be delivered to Tok in May. According to our trusty Mukluk News (Tok’s 2x a month paper), on May 7th, there’ll be a concert at Faith Chapel at 7pm to debut the concert-level instrument. Refreshments will be served during intermission. Musical fare will include classical, jazz and gospel.

This piano arriving in Tok is huge news. I heard about the donation of the piano to the church months ago and told my girlfriend about it. She’s the Executive Director of Sitka Summer Music Festival.

Her eyes opened wide when she heard which piano was actually being delivered. Apparently, there are only a handful of pianos of this quality – the Steinway Concert Grand Model D – in all of Alaska. Once again, Tok tramples the perception that “nothing happens” in rural Alaska communities. The presence of this superior instrument in Tok could attract amazing talent to the community so we might be hearing announcements of several stellar concerts in the near future.

The Mukluk also says there’s be several concerts presented at Tok School on May 6, then in the evening, adults who are pianists can take the Steinway for a test drive.

What do YOU hope a piano of this caliber brings to Tok?
