My family is thinking about relocating to Alaska.
Just out of curiosity do you know how expensive internet & cellular phone service (with internet) is there?
Internet has really come down in price since they brought in fiber optic. The fastest connection (DSL) is $79.99/month but they do have cheaper plans.
Cellular – I have AT&T (iPhone) and pay for phone and a large data plan with unlimited text so I pay for it. Reception is very good right in Tok but quickly evaporates away from the community. Verizon tends to get a little more rural reception.
ACS and GCI are the Alaska main cell providers in the cities and both AT&T & Verizon use their towers. I have tried both and while coverage is a little better throughout the state, I was never impressed with either and was glad when my contracts ended.
In Tok, we are covered by AP&T and the folks in the office locally are very helpful and nice. Since I already have cellular, I haven’t looked into their rates.
I live in Eagle River, AK where it was not nearly as cold. My favorite part of that screen from weather underground is that the temp is -44.3, but it feels like only -44.
