Camping at Dead Man Lake Campground Outside Tok

About an hour and change outside Tok (about 67 miles) is the Dead Man Lake Campground managed by U.S. Fish and Wildlife. It is an entirely free campground that is very well maintained (the other, Lakeview, needs work and they’re on it). We had a wonderful holiday weekend with friends at Dead Man in a roomy level camp site – accommodated two tents in addition to our 15 foot trailer and two other cars. We had lake view and an easy walk to the water where we put in our canoes and boats.

There is a really nice boardwalk going through the campground with informational signs along the way identifying flora and fauna. Weeknights in the summertime – 7pm – a ranger gives an interpretive presentation (we missed it on the weekend).

I’d highly recommend this campground to anyone driving along the Alaska Highway.

What are YOUR favorite campgrounds in Alaska? Got pics? Feel free to share!

    What’s the gun for? Bears?

    • yes, bears. Some have been pushing over the bear-safe trash receptacles at the campground (they are going to have to cement them in to prevent that). So have bear sightings, have gun.

Looks lovely, but I have to be honest – I’d be a little creeped out going anywhere near something called “Dead Man Lake” šŸ˜‰ What’s the story behind the name?

    • You know I’m not sure about the origin of the name – I’ll ask around. And I didn’t really think of it until you said something although I did have a moment’s pause saying the name to my 4 year old daughter.
