Tok Tidbits

Did you hear…

  • A new hair salon is opening up soon in Tok? Anyone want to open up a coffee shop/bookstore, too? With wifi? 😉
  • The Parent Committee for Head Start is having a raffle? Fly-in fishing trip’s the main prize.
  • If you’re looking for Pampered Chef or Mary Kay products, see Shauna Lee. Order before end of the month and The Tok School Science dept will get a portion of sales for their fundraiser.
  • Today was Tetlin National Wildlife Refuge’s annual Christmas Bird Count. Did you participate?
  • Wed. Dec 16 @ 7pm is the book club held in the Refuge kitchen. They’ll be discussing the book, “Oil Spill” by Sharon Bushell. Even if you haven’t read it yet, they invite you to join the discussion.

Got a tidbit to share? Happy to post it on this blog (no charge)!

  1. I totally want to open a coffee shop/bookstore there – but I’m afraid it will have to wait awhile yet… can’t do that until I “retire” – then I know the husband will be totally on board with the idea.

We keep talking about opening a coffee shop in a remote place where we don’t care if it makes $ we just enjoy the people. 🙂

Anon’s right, our humble little hamlet of Tok has had more than one of each in the recent past and they wound up moving on to greener pastures. That said, they were great little spots where people hung out and congregated, with the occasional spontaneous jam sessions. I’m thinking a small place like the Backdoor in Sitka would do great. It would have to be multi-faceted to survive, though; the specialized places, i.e. just coffee or just books didn’t fare well. Good Luck !

  4. WHOA…A new hair salon!? Sounds like some big changes for little Tok…I agree that it would be wonderful for a full-time coffee shop to open up. Maybe just a tiny cabin that is really warm in the winter with live music, book readings for the kids etc. I know you have talked about this often on here. I hope some day someone will attempt this again (It has been said that it was tried various times before, but I agree that it would need to be a multi-faceted business to really profit.) Anyone out there reading, this would be a great small business to tackle! =)
