4-Wheeling in Tok

May 30, 2009 · 5 Comments

ATVing, 4-Wheeling, whatever you call it, we did it the other evening for our “Date Night.” Here are some photos from the evening.

And yes, the hubby brought his gun. Just in case we encountered a bear.

I also learned that people who “bait” bears, need to put up a notice to designate a bear baiting area to warn others.

Fun and learning in the great outdoors!

Please show the picture of Hubby’s method of carrying the weapon in case of bears to some local Alaskans. I suspect they will tell you that bears are VERY quick, and he will likely not have time to bring that weapon into action before damage is done to himself, or to you.

      Bill,

      Thank you for your concern.

First, that photo was immediately after my husband stepped off the ATV to look at the view for a moment. His ATV was still running.

As any Alaskan knows, there are two common ways of carrying your gun on an ATV. The first is in a gun holder but they break. The second is wearing it.

Second, we were ATVing on a trail so although anything can happen, the noise from the ATVs can likely keep you from encountering a bear right on a trail. Our ATVs were running – I took the photo while sitting on mine.

Finally, my husband started out as a biologist working with grizzly bears in Alaska. He has had many bear encounters. And he teaches bear safety (certified). He is well aware of how to carry a gun in “bear country.”

hello I was just wondering also what kind of shot is hubby looking to put on that attacking bear with the gun slung over his shoulder like that the bear attack is likely to be hard fast deliberate and without a warning just hitting the bear wont cut it he got to be hit hard and in the right spot to stop him

7 mile. Nice ride. John Hectel is crazy. I think he’s been sneekin’ the M-60. Black bears are yummy ! Your photos are probably 50 feet from a bear stand…dem bears all over there.
