Living in Tok Blog on Day To Day on NPR!

January 9, 2009 · 6 Comments

The interview I recorded yesterday was aired this morning on the wonderful news show Day To Day (a partnership between NPR and Slate.com). I spoke with Noah Adams. He asked me all sorts of things about the weather here in Tok. Yesterday, we were pushing -78 and today -70.

You can listen to it later this afternoon at:

For those of you checking Weather Underground for temps in Tok, the main Tok link they use is NOT accurate. Possibly correct for the crossroads area of “town,” but for those of us blocks away, the temps are not measurable on our thermometers.

On Weather Underground, try choosing APRSWXNET or Turks on the Tundra as the weather source and watch the temps measured drop by at least 10 degrees below what the main temp reads.

I finally got to listen to the interview in it’s entirety. All I can say is Wow and keep safe.

If you get the chance and can, it would be awesome to video tape yourself taking a cup of hot water and toss it into the air so we can watch it freeze before it hits the ground. I have seen photos of this but never any video.

About the dog that went to “lay down”. He didn’t “lay down” or “lie down”, he simply became a chili dog.

So, what’s the big deal about being questionably the coldest place in the UNIVERSE, anyway? Eventually, you just get used to it, your brain gets a little slower from the lower viscosity blood going through it, and you dream of the good old days when it was zero or better and the squirrels were out running around…

We lived in Saskatchewan for 12 years. Loved the cold. Just gotta dress right :) Weather? Check: Noaa.gov I put in tok, ak and got this:
http://forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.php?zoneid=AKZ224. Hope it’s accurate for you. Minus 15 is pretty warm…t-shirt weather, if you’re quick!

I just love it! NPR and Slate are the same folks who believe in Global Warming. Yet, -80 will NOT wake them up!!!!!!!
